UNC to Meineke; Wake to D.C. bowl

Charlotte’s Meineke Car Care Bowl landed the local draw it craved Sunday when North Carolina accepted an invitation to play in the Dec. 27 game at Bank of America Stadium.

The Tar Heels (8-4) will meet West Virginia (8-4) of the Big East in a game that will be televised at 1 p.m. on ESPN. The Meineke has averaged 60,000 fans over its previous six seasons by relying on schools within a short driving distance of Charlotte to deliver big crowds.

In 2002, West Virginia lost to Virginia as the bowl debuted in Charlotte with a sellout crowd. Two years later, North Carolina helped deliver the bowl’s only other sellout in a loss to Boston College.

This will be the Tar Heels’ first bowl appearance since that game.

Wake to play at RFK

Wake Forest has accepted an invitation to play Navy in the inaugural EagleBank Bowl on Dec. 20 at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C.

It will be the second meeting of the schools this season. Navy defeated the Deacons 24-17 on Sept. 27 in Winston-Salem.

The bowl will kick off at 11 a.m. and will be televised by ESPN. It will be the first of the 34 bowl games this season.

Has NC State accepted the bid to Boise?

I thought Navy had a clause in their bowl contract that they wouldn't play a team they had already faced this season and they have already played (and beaten) WF. What happened? Was this not true?

With grammar and spelling like that, you must have flunked out of elementary school.

The derogatory comments about WVU folks are sickening and pathetic. As a UNC fan, I am thoroughly embarrassed if these people are Carolina supporters.

Lighten up dude, it is just some trash talk. This is football after all. I mean seriously, do you think someone reads this and thinks "geez, you have to grease up your door frame and push her through. That seems like a lot of work." They are just jokes you moron.

Same tired WV jokes. Get some new material or keep quiet.

Stuck-up Tarheel fan and a Red Neck writing stupid insults. You two were made for each other. It's two decent football teams and their fans will bring a tremendous amount of revenue to our city. Sounds pretty good to me during these tough economic times.
Go Panthers.

Buffy, Parker, Muffin, and Thad cheering for UNC ever so hard, and the bad asses from West by God Virginia raining hell down on that preppy liitle group of "players" in their tightie whities and sky blue panties. Tarholes, you ain't seen hell yet, but it's coming!

Biggest mystery of all is why college football doesn’t have a playoff. The current system relegates college football to an exhibition rather than a sport. When rankings are decided by someone’s opinion rather than performance elimination it is categorized with figure skating and diving.
There are about 32 bowls now. Cut the regular season to eight games. Allow the minor bowls to host some elimination rounds starting Thanksgiving. 64 teams participate based on each conference best. Six week playoff will conclude a week prior to the Super Bowl or Saturday night before. Current system is about money however a playoff would generate unimaginable revenue if common sense prevailed.

Does Tarheel fans even support football ? Meineke Bowl officials better hope the basketball team isn't playing same day.

I've heard a lot of State fans complain that Armanti Edwards isn't as good as Russell Wilson because AE plays FCS teams, which is "JV league."

Well, State fans, why should your win against that JV team, William & Mary, do anything to help you squeeze into your pathetic excuse of a bowl game? After all, you're 5-6 without William & Mary. For that matter, many State fans claim that Duke is a JV team. Without Duke or William & Mary, you're 4-6.

There's no way this side of the Lake of Fire that the college football regular season would be reduced to 8 games. That's shorter than a high school schedule!

Here's my solution:

Cut the season to 11 games, ending the week before Thanksgiving for the SEC, ACC, Big 12, MAC, and C-USA (because they have conference championship games). For the other conferences, the season could end the weekend of Thanksgiving. Conference championships would be held the weekend of Thanksgiving.

Form a selection committee to pick 8 teams for a playoff. The #9 & 10 teams can cry all they want when they're left out, but the selection committee can just remind them that they wouldn't have been in the discussion under the BCS system.

Meanwhile, all the non-BCS bowls bowls can select their participants immediately after the playoff field has been selected.

Round 1 would be held the first weekend of December at the home stadiums of the top four seeds. Why not at bowl sites? Because there's absolutely no way for 85,000 fans of ANY team to make travel arrangements to Tempe on a week's notice, especially for a game when they know another game could be on the horizon. Plus, rewarding top teams with home field advantage sustains the integrity of regular season.

Second round is held the second weekend of December.

Three of the four BCS bowl games would match teams that were eliminated in earlier rounds, allowing no rematches. The other BCS game would be the championship game. The BCS games would be held at similar times to when they're currently held, allowing fans ample time for travel arrangements.
