Davis "shocked" at his dismissal

Departing North Carolina football coach Butch Davis said in a statement released to the media late Wednesday night that he was shocked to hear of his dismissal.

Davis was fired after four seasons, a 28-23 record with three bowl appearances, and NCAA allegations of nine major violations against his program.

Here is the full text of his statement:

"I was honestly shocked to receive word that I will no longer be the head football coach at the University of North Carolina," Davis said. "I can honestly say that I leave with full confidence that I have done nothing wrong. I was the head coach and I realize the responsibility that comes with that role.

"But I was not personally involved in, nor aware of, any actions that prompted the NCAA investigation. I thank my family for enduring this tough situation. I thank the fans and broader university community who have embraced us and endured these difficult circumstances with poise and grace. To the players, I wish them only the best on the field and academically. The coaches and their families know how much I appreciate their work and dedication. It's a sad day, but I'm certain better times will follow."

I know the guy is no Dean Smith (St.), but that is hardly a reason for attempted electrocution.

Oh, better read the post first.

The "Two Way Talker" will never own up. Guy was slime in Miami, slime at the Browns, and slime at UNC. To think anything different is laughable.

Walks like duck, quack like a duck, etc... it's probably a duck.

Put Johm Edwards in as coach - he can sink this ship too!

Thorp is blatantly wrong (again) with this one, although I have a feeling that the change in leadership on the UNC BOT had something to do with it.
The reason given for his firing was to restore the academic integrity of the University, which was being called into question.
When the players cheated, they go before the honor court, which is University policy for all students. The honor court was inept, which isn't the coaches fault. An inept honor court falls under the Chancellor; he is responsible for honor court, yet the coach is fired.
What a joke...if they wish to clean house, then clean house. Get rid of Thorp and Baddour.
I'm sad to see you go Coach; you didn't monitor your coaches enough, but I thought that was a lesson learned to move forward. Instead, Chancellor Thorp just destroyed football at UNC for the next decade.

Mike Nifong...John Edwards...Butch Davis...Marion Jones...

Poster-child alums for UNCheat, a DIRTY institution that does things the wrong way. Bring the hammer, NCAA.

Relieving Davis is the correct thing to do, but, not relieving Baddour and the other football coaches is a laugh at the stink in the UNC. Do you believe for one minute the other coaches didn't know what was going on with the football program? The position coaches kept their mouths shut and looked the other way. I'm sure Davis would have offerred to pay them well if they didn't like the the way he was running the ship and wanted out. Didn't he pay the coach that was set up as the fall-guy for all this stink and left earlier this year. I say get rid of the AD and all football coaches if UNC wants to wipe some of the stain off their face.

Baddour gone. Check.

Now time for that spineless, weasly little twig Holden Remington Thorp III to call it quits.

Then bring in a new coach to wipe out the whole Davis staff.

Next up: Bowl bans (like they'll get 6 wins), scholarship losses, vacated Tire Bowl losses!

This is so big yall. The tutoring stuff is minor. For all intent and purposes UNC hired an agent to coach. His salary was way higher than most position coaches... The purpose was have an in-house track to NFL agents. UNC wanted to go to the next level. How do you get NFL talent to come to a basketball school? Hire a "coach" with ties to agents. It's that simple. Tutoring? That's chump change... Socks and underwear... A diversion... A front for the real intent. If the "tutoring" problem goes away- then hopefully investigators ignore bigger problems. It would then appear the NCAA is "picking on" UNC. Again- Where are the investigative reporters from theh UNC School Of Journalism on staff at The Observer. We'll never know how many favored their alma mater over the truth but rest assured now that Baddour is gone- all the pompous grads will pile on with their indignation about this not being the Carolina Way, but were no where to be found before. Like Nifong... and John Edwards- We support the winning, but pile on when folk mess with fantasy world of being a UNC Alum.

TA- Does State have a law shool?

When John Edwards was in the Presidential spotlight, he was a proud UNC Law School Alum. Now, that he is a no-good, two-timing cheater and fraud and took advantage of his cancer-stricken wife, he is a NC State Alum. hmmmm.

For Whom the Bell Tolls UNC Alums and Walmart fans, no getting out of this one!!!!!!

Edwards went to State AND UNC. We both have to claim that piece of trash.

Butch Davis however went to Arkansas. So there's that.

Butch Does that mean you're going to take the 216 cell phone or leave it for next guy.

Tarheel football, dead for at least a decade. The return to mediocrity will be slow indeed.

Withers was the #1 agent contact for the ex-players and he is the interium coach aka next coach?

LOL. Davis had nothing to do with all of the cheating scandal.

Thorp throws the baby out and leaves the dirty bath water to take charge?
