South Meck's Shuey commits to Clemson

South Mecklenburg linebacker/fullback Spencer Shuey committed to Clemson, his father, Mark, told the Observer.

"He had a great visit there this past weekend and loved the campus, facilities and especially Coach Dabo Swinney," Mark Shuey said.

Shuey, named one of the Observer's top 25 high school recruits from North Carolina, is a 6-foot-3, 245-pound senior. His recruiting profile increased after he was named defensive MVP at the Shrine Bowl in December. He led South Meck to an improbable run to the N.C. 4A semifinals, rushing for 1,250 yards and 14 touchdowns. On defense, he had 87 tackles.

Shuey is pretty suspect playing on the defensive side of the ball. Any word if LB is the position he will be playing at Clemson?

Suspect? More like a sure thing Shuey will make a good LB or possible DE at Clemson. Once at Clemson, they will make him stronger and faster than he is now. Shuey has a good pair of hands too which he demonstrated this year and more so the year before when Yokeley was the SM quarterback.

Coaches never play a single down in a game but, credit must be given to SM head coach James Martin. He and his coaching staff have done a remarkable job at SM over the past two seasons. Martin's team this year had slightly less overall talent but strong determination that carried them to the NC 4A state semis. We'll never know but if not for a grossly unfortunate technicality the season before,SM would likely have reached the state semis or better with that teams talent. Best to Shuey!
