Thorp, Woodson exchange apologies

Chancellors Holden Thorp of UNC-Chapel Hill and Randy Woodson of N.C. State have exchanged apologies over the verbal sparring that took place in the media between their football coaches.

"Holden and I have a great relationship," Woodson said in a statement e-mailed by N.C. State spokesman Keith Nichols. "We talked this morning, exchanged apologies and we're moving on."

According to UNC spokeswoman Nancy Davis, Thorp called Woodson this morning and left a message. The chancellors spoke later and apologized.

"They had a good conversation," Davis said in an e-mail. "They're good friends, and they respect each other and their institutions."

In a taped interview aired Wednesday on 99.9 The Fan, Withers said recruits need to know that UNC is the flagship school in the state. Withers said there is a difference between the graduation rates of the schools for athletes and football players.

"If you look at the educational environment here, I think you'll see a difference," Withers said.

Wolfpack coach Tom O'Brien reacted angrily after practice this morning, saying N.C. State's graduation rates are improving and criticizing UNC for NCAA violations that resulted in a Committee on Infractions hearing Oct. 28 in Indianapolis.

"If that’s what people want in their flagship university in North Carolina," O'Brien said, "then so be it."

Apology accepted, at least someone take responsibility for things that go on during his watch.

Does Thorpe even have a single vertebra in his spine...seriously!

Does anyone even listen to what the football coach at UNC says or anything any coach at State says?

Remember the tar holes have tutors though...

As Mike said, who cares what either one of them says? It's just football. Both schools are fine academic institutions, and to judge them on the basis of their athletes' academic ability is ludicrous. Most of those guys are not really students, anyway, though there are some exceptions.

"Most of those guys are not really students, anyway, though there are some exceptions."

That generalization could apply to the entire student body instead of just the athletes. If the kids are enrolled in the universities, they are officially categorized as students.

Withers basically said it was harder to get into UNC than NCSU, which is true, and people got mad about it. What am I missing here? Both schools blow.

Goodbye Coach Withers. I hope your two minute rant was worth your future as a coach.

this would've been excellent taunting prior to a quiz bowl.....not football.

this is a good display of the state of football in the ACC.

Who cares? Irrelevant teams, they both suck. Do yourself favors and watch Bama-LSU instead.

Holden Thorp is a whimp!!!

The premier ranking of colleges in thecountry is done by US News and World Report.

UNC ranks #29
NC State #101

Case closed.

Rankings don't mean much, how is UNC's engineering school? NCSU's med school. Different strokes for different folks. Get your degree and that's a start. Make something out of yourself after graduation, that is what matters.

Neither one of these teams are worth anything and one put a severe black eye on their school. Nothing to proud about.

Proud graduate of UNC Charlotte with a comfortable top 5% living thank you.

The heck with Holden Thorpe. He's slimy and needs to go.

NC State does have one high ranking. They came in at #7 in the 20 ugliest campuses in America.

How did Charlotte College get included in here? UNCC is a wannabe for both Carolina and State. Talk about blowing. You guys are lucky to draw 1,000 to Halton for a basketball game. Great fan support there. Which conference you guys gonna be in next year. Heck, nobody wants you and it is no wonder why.

O'Brien has to talk tough. The guy has been a failure at State and the only reason he still has a job is his record against UNC. His record against all other FBS teama is abysmal. Only 1 winnin grecord in 4 years and the only way he might get one this year is by scheduling TWO FCS teams.

Who really cares. In this area college basketball is all that matters. Football is just an appetizer. We have Carolina the #1 team in the country and Duke at #6. Who needs football?

Withers showed after winning his first game that he is unworthy of coaching at any school with any class, and then doubles down on week of State game. What an embarrassment to me and all other Carolina grads. Bubba better pick a good coach quickly!

Withers will be lucky to get a high school job...

GREAT RIVALRY...APOLOGIES OFFERED AND ACCEPTED. MOVE ON..MOVE ON!

Highly disappointing to learn that Chancellor Woodson apologized for what TOB spoke truthfully to defend some misconceptions about academics & athletics from an interim rube who realized from game 1 that he'll be out of a job. Grow a pair Chancellor Woodson, did you want TOB to just remain silent and think that Uncle Ev was correct??

They've managed to create some interest and a little fire in a game between two teams with losing conference records. Everyone is sitting here picking sides and deciding who's right and who's wrong, all I see is a fantastic sales job by both sides. If there's nothing to be gained or lost in the win/loss column, create some drama. Well-played by both camps. Can't wait for the kickoff. Go Heels.

Who cares about either of these schools. They both pale in comparison to The University... Go Wahoos!!!!!

Here's the problem with that thought, 5:12: that statement ONLY applies to the general public. UNC will accept any old boy who can play sports and give him As in advanced-level classes so long as it keeps him eligible. So the notion of UNC's academic superiority hardly applies in this sphere of relevance.
