Four N.C. State football players face drug charges

Four N.C. State football players face misdemeanor charges after a search of an apartment near campus turned up marijuana and drug paraphernalia early Saturday morning, according to records at the Wake County courthouse.

Three players - defensive tackles Markus Kuhn and J.R. Sweezy, and offensive tackle Jake Vermiglio - were charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, simple possession of marijuana and maintaining a dwelling for the purpose of using a controlled substance. All the charges are misdemeanors.

Tight end George Bryan faces a single charge of maintaining a dwelling for the purpose of using a controlled substance.

Through a school spokeswoman, N.C. State coach Tom O'Brien commented in a brief statement.

"I have been made aware of the situation," O'Brien said, "and appropriate action will be taken."

According to a Raleigh police search warrant, the players were in a College Inn apartment where police found marijuana and drug paraphernalia early Saturday morning.

An off-duty Raleigh police officer working security at the College Inn complex on the 2700 block of Western Boulevard reported smelling the strong odor of marijuana from the doorway of a third-floor apartment as he walked the hallway at about 1 a.m. Saturday, according to the warrant.

After knocking on the door and meeting the tenants to confirm his observations, the warrant said, investigators seized three plastic bags filled with about six grams of marijuana, a "blunt" cigar stuffed with marijuana, two homemade bongs and other paraphernalia.

Sweezy was suspended from the team indefinitely in March after an unrelated incident. He was charged with misdemeanor assault and misdemeanor larceny after a March 18 altercation with a shuttle bus driver in Mooresville.

More details to come.

That's one heck of a disciplinarian they've got for a coach, there.

Four young adults in privacy of home on a weekend and this happens.Must've been a slow night in law enforcement.Seems sometimes like Nazi Germany.Something is and has been very wrong.Don't care what Courts' views have been but clearly a violation of First Amendment.Only victim of this crime is the Constitution( as well as accused.

If Tom O'Brien is anything, it's a disciplinarian. Not good that all the guys are supposed to be contributors.

Shocking this comes out of NC State!! Hardly...

They got busted and should pay the consequences - until it is legalized, smoking pot is still against the law.

they smoke weed at state and poles over at unc. hehehe

The Nazi's smoked poles, too...

Give it 4 weeks and it will be out of the news, just like Richard Quinn and Donte Moss' assault charges or Tavares Brown and LeCount Fantroy. Right, right?

Surely the two largest public schools in the state are treated the same when it comes to the court of public opinion. Especially when perception of so many can be steered by so few. I'm confident these NCSU players' will be afforded the same "innocent until proven guilty" liberties as the list of UNC players you can find on the link below.

OOOH.....marijuana,drinking,and other drugs involved with college athletes. What a story!!! Like this never happens in chapel hole.Heck...jimmy clausen was seen in a pic drinking at a frat house when he was 19 and a freshman at ND,but since he is a panther now,you won't hear about it.The observer writes what they want, not what is consistant news.Even the observer has layed low about duke winning the national championship, but when the holes won it,it was still in the sports page 3 months later.

Four young adults on State property not a home. And you compare this to Nazi Germany you must have some really sad sad values in life. TO compare this to a Nazi anything is beyond a lost case

Who cares, this SHOULD NOT be on the main page...most people smoke pot today.

WHO CARES!

i wouldn't say most people smoke pot...but with most athlete's sense of entitlement I am not surprised

Thank goodness we open with Western Carolina this year, and not South Carolina. Because none of them are going to be playing in the first game.

The weed is likely to be less of a concern than the ephedrine, which just happens to be on the list of substances banned by the NCAA. Somebody is looking at both criminal charges and NCAA drug policy violation.

It appears that a lot of you druggies and potheads that are defending these so-called athletes, find it ok to indulge in these activities. Is it any wonder that college sports are full of these thug type characters. Maybe that is why only about thirty five percent of college athletes actually graduate with a degree.

Way to go NC State.....You make our State proud........

Sweezy should be gone, he was already on suspension. Others should have AT LEAST one game suspension.
Having said that, I went to college many years ago I wonder why Barney Fife was walking the halls sniffing doors. Sure hope they do not issue him a bullet.
The kids should have consequences but if it is the first offense one game would work.

Not all of the details are reported here. How about we use some common sense and the right of innocent until proven guilty.

Sweezy has had issues since high school.

How did the arrest of NC State players ignite so much hate for the Tarheels? Makes you wonder if everyone is jealous of Tarheel Nation. See you on the football field Woofpack!
