Marvin Austin on track for Shrine game

All-star college football game rosters can change frequently between the time players commit to participate and the actual kickoff.

But if all goes as planned, North Carolina's Marvin Austin will compete for the East team in the Jan. 22 East vs. West Shrine game in Orlando, Fla.

Kevin Best of the UNC sports information department said Tuesday that the 6-foot-3, 305-pound defensive lineman is expected to make the trip and play.

Austin, a preseason all-ACC pick, did not play during 2010. After being withheld early in the season during an NCAA investigation into illegal involvement with agents, he was dismissed from the program on Oct. 11.

Prior to the season, Austin was projected as a second-round pick in the April 28-30 NFL Draft.

Also scheduled to play in the East vs. West game are Virginia Tech quarterback Tyrod Taylor and Clemson offensive lineman Chris Hairston among others from the ACC.

Slated to play in the Jan. 29 Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., are Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder and Miami wide out Len Hankerson among others from the ACC.

To date, no other players from UNC, N.C. State and Duke are listed on the postseason all-star rosters, but the list of players for the Feb. 5 NFLPA Game in San Antonio has not yet been released in full.

Anchorman surely deserves this opportunity after being shunned by the Tarheel faitful. Big Marv has done the UNC a big favor by bringing out the pathetic treatment that UNC has shown these fine young men, who made a few little mistakes. Hope he gets to wear his High School Helmet instead of the baby blue one. I know he has been working out to show his stuff to the scouts.

Didn't Big Marv exhaust his amateur status when he accepted > $30,000 worth of cash and benefits? And yes, that figure was given by UNC-Cheat's own Baddour.

Gosh....you mean no players from the highly ranked Wuffies? Maybe Caoch Sternface can complain like he did about the rankings...how embarrasing.

Dang, I thought Jared Loughner was in jail. Apparently they're letting him post on Charlotteobserver.com and he's posing as Anonymous 1:57PM.

What is your world like, dude? Do pigs fly there?

If he played for Ohio State it would have been ok...the system sucks!

Poster 6:51 PM, you missed the wee bit of sarcasm, I take it...

Amazing a player who did the right thing his entire collegiate career will be dropped for this loser. He did wrong, he knows it, the NCAA knows it, the media knows it, and UNC-CH knows it. What a disgrace to this game.
He even was dumb enough to mouth off about it publicy on website....pure genius. Like I said a good players who believes in rules and plays by them is shunned.
Certain UNC-CH fans say this happens everywhere.....that is dead solid wrong.

Hey Observer...what about Dwayne Harris from ECU. He is expected as well. Open your eyes and ears!

Hey Anon 9:16pm,

The CO was talking about the REAL schools in the state. Not the lowsy one's that go 0-3 against the ACC this year. EZU will never be able to compete with the UNC or NC State. Y'all need to stick with teams that you can compete with, like Memphis ... LOL!!!

Sorry ... I just realized that including the bowl game EZU, you went 0-4 against the ACC this year ... Tell Terry Holland he might want to start negotiations with Wingate or Elon and get you some games you can win ... stay out of the ACC ...

Didn't "EZU" beat the Wolfpack? Just checking. Before you make a sweeping generalization about ECU football, at least get your facts straight. Not an ECU fan, but the "real" schools in the State (and the ACC) aren't exactly stellar football programs, or haven't you noticed? The ACC champ lost to James Madison, for goodness sakes. Maybe the ACC should negotiate with Wingate and Elon, since VT and UNC have problems with CAA teams (see UNC v. William and Mary). By the way, it's "lousy", not "lowzy."

ECU BEAT NCSU!!!!!! Check your facts! ECU has beat every ACC school in NC within the last 5 years. legends in your own minds. Quit disrespecting the Pirates when they play on your level. The observer disrespects them enough.
Not even a fan, just sick of your comments about them. They have beaten some darn good teams the last few years.
