Irving's surgery successful

N.C. State linebacker Nate Irving's surgery was successful and went as expected on Sunday after he suffered a broken leg and collapsed lung in a car crash early Sunday morning, school sports information director Annabelle Myers said Monday morning.

Irving suffered injuries that were serious but not life threatening in a one-vehicle crash on Interstate 40 while returning to campus from his home in Wallace, N.C., northwest of Wilmington.

Myers said coach Tom O'Brien visited Irving at the Wake Med Trauma Center on Sunday and said Irving feels extremely fortunate to be alive after the crash.

According to a state highway patrol report, Irving ran off the road at 4:40 a.m. near the 314-mile marker in western Johnston County. He was cited for careless and reckless driving, and being tired or sleepy may have contributed to the crash, according to the police report.

Irving is a junior who was expected to be one of the top linebackers in the ACC this season. Myers said Irving's playing status for the 2009 season has not yet been determined.

Thank you for the update Ken. Something like this places everything into the correct perspective. Everything in your life can change in a second. Sometimes for bad, sometimes for good.

What did NC State do to tick the sports gods off.

Nate get better soon.

Though my instincts tell me this season is lost.

He needs to use a little better judgment. If you’re tired and it is 4:40 in the morning, then don’t drive. He could have just gotten a little sleep and drove home the next morning, but for some reason he decided to drive home at 4:40 in the morning, when he was "sleepy". He just better be glad he only hurt himself and not some innocent driver on the road. Good to see he was cited for carless and reckless driving.

Wow, way to be a sympathetic human being anonymous poster. I'm sure you've never decided you needed to be somewhere at a certain time and had to drive while a little tired. I hope he recovers fast but for those who say this they fear this season is lost, I guess they forget that we have linebackers Ray Michel, Audi Cole, Terrell Manning, Dwayne Maddox, Sterling Lucas, and Micheal Beasley there to step up in Nate's place. The defensive line will have to step up to give those guys some help but when you have future NFL player Willie Young leading the line as well as several other beasts in there the Wolfpack should be just fine.

I think what was meant was that this season would be lost for Nate, not the whole team. Nate was a difference maker and his loss will be felt, but with time to prepare the other LBs in summer camp, I think coach O'Brien will have them ready to fill the hole.

The right perspective is that he was blessed to still be alive. Football is secondary to that.

Get well soon Nate! We want to see you making one handed interceptions on the field this season! But don't get well TOO soon if your body isn't ready; best wishes

Get well Nate! We will miss you this season, but rehab and get healthy first. For those casting stones for a bad decision, a large number of people have driven tired. Remember, he is a young man, and NO alcohol or drugs were involved. I'm sure he would have done things differently, but you don't know the circumstances for his early/late departure so be careful before passing judgement.
Good to know that there are many "perfect" drivers out there to offset this mistake.

Like it or not, the kid made a bad decision and now he is paying for it. No reason to feel sorry for him. You learn from your mistakes.

I hope TOB has worked on the depth at LB we showed promise.

I am guessing Nate will miss the season, hopefully he will be back at 100% soon as he has a future on the next level.

The Pack will certainly miss him we will be better, but the games he missed we lost last season
