North Carolina sophomore wide receiver T.J. Thorpe suffered a broken foot in a practice Sunday and will be sidelined an unspecified amount of time, according to what his mother told the Durham Herald-Sun.
Thorpe, a former standout at Jordan High in Durham, led the ACC with an average kickoff return of 26.7 yards a season ago. In addition to his role as a return specialist, he was expected to play a larger role as a receiver in first-year coach Larry Fedora's spread offense.
Carmen Thorpe told the Herald-Sun that she wasn't sure how much time her son would miss.
"It's definitely not a bad injury but it's going to take some time to heal," she said.
Carmen Thorpe did not return a phone call seeking additional comment. UNC, meanwhile, hasn't confirmed Thorpe's injury. Fedora has said it's his policy not to discuss injuries.
